Youth pheasant hunting open this weekend

Youth Pheasant and Quail Hunting Season is Saturday and Sunday across the state.

Public lands, walk-in hunting areas and private lands, with permission, are open for young people to get the first chance at upland birds.

Those 16 and younger may hunt under the supervision of an adult, 18 years and older. The supervising adult may not hunt and does not need a hunting license. Those 15 and younger do not need a hunting license or hunter education; however, 16-year-old hunters need a license and hunter education certification. The daily bag limit is two cock pheasants and four quail.

From 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is hosting a youth trap shoot at Waconda Lake. The trap shoot will take place just west of the Glen Elder Area Office, just south of the U.S. Highway 24 and Kansas Highway 128 junction, about a mile west of Glen Elder. There is no cost for the trap shoot. Shot shells and targets will be provided. Shooters may use their own shotguns, but youth model shotguns will be available.

Prizes will be awarded to hunters with the longest tail feather on a rooster bagged that day and the biggest quail by weight. Bring the birds from 1 to 4 p.m.
