'Acoustic Aires' to be at Brown Grand

CONCORDIA -- The Brown Grand Theatre will present "Acoustic Aires," a celebration of Americana Roots Music, at 7 p.m. July 17.

The concert will feature the music of the performing duo Wayne and Arthetta Long and soloist John Hamlin.

The Longs have been performing as a duo since 2004. Wayne has given private lessons and instructional workshops in finger style guitar methods, slide guitar methods and special guitar tunings. Arthetta developed an ear for music as a young child and learned to sing melody and harmonies with her sisters and brother. The Longs perform a variety of music styles on vintage National resophonic guitars, as well as standard six-string guitars, banjo and autoharp.

Hamlin, a guitarist, performs, arranges, publishes, distributes and markets his music full time. He plays a broad range of music that includes Spanish, jazz, blues, pop and originals.

Tickets cost $10. They can be purchased at the door or in advance at www.brown grand.org, at the Brown Grand box office from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday or by calling (785) 243-2553.

Cowboy artist's work at Prairie Museum

COLBY -- The Prairie Museum of Art and History will exhibit the art and poetry of the late Roswell, N.M., artist Keith Avery through August.

Avery, who died in June 2005, left behind an extensive collection of Western paintings and other works completed in eight mediums that depict horses and cowboy life. He had paintings on the covers of the Quarter Horse Journal and Western Horseman numerous times.

Avery was a graduate of New Mexico State University. He also was the recipient of an honorary doctor of letters from NMSU. In 1994 he was awarded the New Mexico's Governor's Award for Excellence in Art for his successful artistic achievements.

The museum, 1905 S. Franklin, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There is no charge to view the exhibition. For more information, call (785) 460-4590.

Printmaker to show work at Sandzén

LINDSBORG -- The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery will display "Two Approaches," an exhibit of relief prints by Norma Dahl Pfaff, of Annandale, Va., Tuesday through Aug. 30. The gallery reception for the artist will be from 2 to 4 p.m. July 12.

Pfaff is a Bethany College graduate. Her work has been exhibited in national print shows. This year, she exhibited in Tacoma, Wash., and Creede, Colo. Since 2000, she has participated in the Washington Area Printmakers juried calendar. For 10 years, she was part of the Washington Printmakers Gallery. In 2008, she moved into a studio at the Workhouse in Lorton, Va. She has memberships with the Washington Print Club and Los Angeles Printmaking Society.

The Sandzén Gallery, 401 N. First, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The gallery will be closed this Saturday for July Fourth. Admission is free and contributions are welcome. For more information, visit www.sandzen.org. or call (785) 227-2220.

Pastel painter resident at Red Barn

LINDSBORG -- Pastel painter, Linda Wisely, of Ratoul, will be the artist-in-residence at the Red Barn Studio, 212 S. Main, Monday through July 19.

Wisely majored in art and graduated with honors from Coffeyville Community College. The artist has been showing and selling her work in Kansas and throughout the U.S. for more than 30 years. She is an active member of the Ottawa Art Guild and the Olathe Visual Artists.

Wisely will teach two workshops. On July 14 from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a children's pastel portrait workshop. The class costs $15. On July 14 and 15 from 6 to 9 p.m., the artist will offer an adult pastel portrait workshop. Working from a model or a photo, participants will learn to paint a soft pastel portrait. Fees for the adult workshop are $20 for Raymer Society members and $35 for nonmembers. Participants for both the children's and adult's workshops must bring their own soft pastels.

Art takes to the streets in Lindsborg

LINDSBORG -- This summer a new event, La Strada dell'Arte (art on the street), will take place in downtown Lindsborg from 5 to 9 p.m. July 11.

La Strada dell'Arte takes inspiration from an age old art form and tradition of 16th century Italy. Professional and amateur artists of all ages are invited to work in groups to create chalk masterpieces. Participants may form their own teams or be assigned to a team the day of the event. Teams may bring an idea for a chalk painting or select from ideas provided by the coordinators.

Musicians, mimes and other performing artists will entertain starting at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m. Lindsborg Live! will present the Brandon Draper Group, a Kansas City jazz trio. Lindsborg restaurants and street venders will offer Italian-inspired delicacies.

Linda Wisely, a pastel painter and Raymer Society's Red Barn Studio artist-in-residence will supervise La Strada dell'Arte.

The cost for the chalk art is $5 per person. Pre-registration by today is not necessary but is appreciated. Free-will donations will be accepted. Ostrich eggs to be at Hansen Museum

LOGAN -- "Ostrich Eggs Series" by Lenné Nicklaus-Ball will be on display at the Dane G. Hansen Museum from July 10 through Aug. 2.

Nicklaus-Ball has assembled antique jewelry, real ostrich eggs and found objects to create memory pieces that pay tribute to her late grandmother.

Nicklaus-Ball has exhibited her work in several galleries in Florida and has a public art piece in the Tampa airport.

Children's author to sign books at library

Kansas author Kelli LaRosh will sign copies of her new book, "What's Math Got to Do With Farming?" from 1 to 3 p.m. July 11 in Art Space at the south entrance of the Salina Public library.

LaRosh is a native of Osborne and recently graduated from college with a degree in math. She also is a member of the Army Reserves and has served overseas.

The book, geared to elementary-aged children, is about a boy named Kenton who hates math and wonders why he has to sit through math class when all he wants to do is farm. Kenton soon learns from his father that math is an important concept in farming. The book features illustrations that help children visualize the math involved.
